Bill Withers, or the dignity of soul. This is the beautiful story of the last good soulman, who decided to abandon stardom and luxury at the peak of his career to go back to his family and friends. A story of tears, of overcoming, of decency and of spirit. And pure soul.

Here is a heart with a break and a reverse gear. Here is Rick James' complete opposite. This is the story of Bill Withers, or a parable on dignity, fame, honesty and soul. This is the beautiful story about the last good soul man, who decided to abandon stardom and luxury at the height of his career to return with his family and friends. It's possible to do it; and what's more: it's recommendable. Just look at his case. Bill Withers was a stuttering and asthmatic boy who - thanks to his grandmother's influence, immortalized in "Grandma's hands"- managed to overcome his condition and got accepted into the air force. And this solitary boy who sang in the shower was discovered by Sussex Records, and his private songs became the unexpected hits of intimate soul: "Ain't no sunshine", "Lean on me", "Just the two of us" or "Use me". But Withers was not like the others, and when he saw what the music industry was made of, he abandoned it to return to a life which, in reality, he had never wanted to leave. Vlack and Baker bring Withers out of his self-imposed exile for him to tell us about this tear-jerking story (Withers cries with heartfelt emotion more than three times in the film) fighting spirit, decency and soul. And, in the end, the recognition a hero like him deserves.

Damani Baker is as much a master of activist documentaries (Grenada: A Dream Deferred), as of ads for Puma or Nike. Alex Vlack co-founded the documentary production house Late Nights and Weekends, and is also an award-winning commercial and video producer.
