The English violinist receives an invitation by the Chinese government in 1979 to visit their country. Debates on Mozart and the corrupt face of the “cultural revolution”  in an Oscar-winning music documentary that surpasses its genre.

The premise is simple: el brilliant American violinist is invited by the communist government to pay a three-week long cultural visit to China in 1979. “Using music as a passport” and narrating it here in his own voice, Stern winds up in the middle of an almost-rural country, aesthetically uniform and musically immobile, and sets about pontificating left, right and centre (full, that he is, of good naturedness and kindness. His voyage (“a visit to meet the people, not a tour”) reveals a succession of debates on Mozart and capitalism, master classes for students (whom he delights with severe but humorous technical reprimands and comparisons with table-tennis), old dog tricks and endless situations filled with humanity and inevitable culture shock. From Mao to Mozart also has its mandatory dark side, when an interview with the director of the Shanghai Observatory becomes an account of the corrupt face of the 1968 Cultural Revolution: the repression, torture and suicides of the maestros “contaminated” by “foreign demons”. An Oscar-winning music documentary that far exceeds its genre.
