This is pure politics. With music, but political. Suffering and Smiling is the history of Nigeria since its independence in 1960, as seen through the lives of two men, father and son: Fela Anikulapo Kuti y Femi Kuti. "Nigeria rots. Africa rots", says the son. "Bring me that man, now", yelled Fela before him. "That man", the one responsible for the rape of Nigeria and its corruption, is Olusegun Obasanjo, president of the country since 1999. And here in this ring, the unfair fight emerges: justice versus tyranny. But Fela and Femi are without guns, armed only with songs and saxes. Suffering and laughing, the Kuti have endured persecution and death, but Femi continues protesting to an African beat for African justice. Suffering and Smiling shows us a man, Femi Kuti, "at humanity's service", loyal to his destiny. In concert, protesting, furious, (Femi "never looks happy") and giving interviews. His life and experience overlap with the situation in the country, in this documentary, narrated with attention and fierceness, with images of both father and son paying their dues: playing live, once and for all. Fight the power, for real.
