The great producer of 60's pop, the Midas touch for the Ronettes and Lennon, was accused of the murder of Lana Clarkson. The film mixes history and fascinating conversation with a follicularly mutant Spector, where the hair-raising trial works like the metronome of a unique life.

The great producer of baroque 1960's pop, John Lennon's and The Ronettes' Midas touch, was accused of assassinating actress Lana Clarkson in 2003. The jury would become an OJ Simpson fun house mirror, with a spaced out Spector, turning up in shocking pompadours and denying his part in the crime. The Agony and the Ecstasy of Phil Spector was taped in April of 2008, when Spector hadn't even been condemned for homicide (and he wouldn't be, until mid 2009). For the most part, it's a documentary that refuses to take sides. What it doesn't do is leave a stone unturned anywhere near Spector. Here, in his first long interview, a devolving Spector takes us through his life, song-by-song, and insult-by-insult. He talks about his early history, "The Wall of Sound", The Ronettes, The Ramones, and especially Lennon and The Beatles, from whom we come away with numerous secrets about their break-up. The producer doesn't skimp on insults for his enemies nor his praise for himself. In a conversation that is part hilarious and part horrific, Spector is sharp, caustic and over the top. This long and essential interview marks a vivid contrast to his catalogue, an analysis of his dark lyrics, and images of the jury, in what results as a unique life, as told by the producer par excellence.
