Ornette: Made in America

Director Shirley Clarke
United States / 78 min. / 1985 / English

Total relevance. A film that’s as free and epileptic, as it is meticulous and explanatory. The visionary of free jazz in the full throes of idolization, captured in his environment, and narrated in past and present. Humility and genius cohabit in the same receptacle.

Total relevance. Formal juxtapositions, veiled implications and parallel experiments in image and sound. This is the film Stanley Clarke made about Coleman in 1985, and it remains as vivid and novel as it did back in the day. This is a documentary that’s as free and epileptic, as it is meticulous and explanatory. Throughout this kaleidoscopic film, the director suggests fugitive narratives that we can’t let escape; the din of the train that passed by his house when he was a child, with a fragment of improvisation by Prime Time, his band of dislocated, demented funk. This documentary is full of these moments, as the viewer is hurled around from archive footage to jams, special effects and conversations with the artist (about free jazz, about structure, with Brion Gysin and William Burroughs...). But what’s truly fascinating is to perceive how Coleman finds himself in the process of canonization (playing the diabolically complex “Skies of America” to an audience of bejewelled white Texans), and nevertheless, his music remains as wild, free and strange as ever. A humble genius that Ornette Coleman: Made in America captures before his definitive deification.
