100 music documentaries. The 100 best? Not exactly: they are our 100 favourites. Ours, and those of a hundred other folks that we invited to participate and get groovy, voting. You see, this list coincides with the outcomes of many other lists.
In the name of celebrating our tenth anniversary, we asked documentary directors, musicians, TV producers, film and music critics, festival programmers, journalists, and others with exquisite taste and highly formed criteria regarding non-fiction music films, to name their 25 favourite titles. In the final scrutiny, there is consensus and balance. And above all, there is passion for this documentary format and its sub-genres: concert films, festival films, tour diaries, spontaneous artist portraits, works of investigative journalism, film essays… and even the odd faux documentary.
A total of 100 titles that intentionally, or unintentionally, explain the different ways in which throughout history until 2011, music has been told in images from a non-fiction perspective (obviously, films of the classical musical genre, or biopics, for example, don’t enter the list). Here at In-Edit, we couldn’t be more chuffed with the final top 100. And we’ve had a blast preparing it. We hope you also have a blast reading it. Here it is. Don’t look back.
